  1. A patriotic song for official occasions. The
  2. US national anthem `The Star-spangled
  3. banner', was written during the war of 1812
  4. by Francis Scott Key and was adopted
  5. officially in 1931. In Britain `God Save the
  6. King/Queen' has been accepted as such since
  7. 1745, although both music and words are of
  8. much earlier origin. The German anthem
  9. `Deutschland uber Alles/Germany before
  10. everything' is sung to music by Haydn. The
  11. French national anthem, the `Marseillaise',
  12. dates from 1792. The `Internationale',
  13. adopted as the Soviet national anthem 1917,
  14. was replaced by the song `Unbreakable Union
  15. of Freeborn Republics' 1944. Countries within
  16. the Commonwealth retain `God Save the
  17. King/Queen' as the `royal anthem', adopting
  18. their own anthem as a mark of independence.
  19. These include `Advance Australia Fair'
  20. 1974-76 and from 1984 `O Canada', written
  21. 1882 and adopted gradually through popular
  22. usage. The anthem of united Europe is
  23. Schiller's `Ode to Joy' set by Beethoven in
  24. his Ninth Symphony.
